551.45 Coastline Views: Effects of IKE

U.S. Geological Survey, a part of the Department of the Interior, has a series of before and after photos of Bolivar Peninsula at Crystal Beach that clearly show the effects of Hurricane Ike on the area. They say they will be adding some more.
If you are unsure as to the power of a hurricane...these photos will clear up any confusion you may have. Amazing!

Thanks for posting this! I saw one of the before-and-after sets in a news story on Yahoo or MSN and you have saved me the trouble of looking for more.

I remember spending some time on Crystal Beach (and Jamaica Beach on west Galveston Island) as a teen. This is really sad.

WOW is an understatement. Hey I would LOVE to subscribe to your comments. Google now offers that in your blog profile. Can you go to the dashboard and make that option available for us? PS--Glad to know u r okay.

Why do I not have our email?? Go to dashboard, click on the settings feed, and i think you activate it there. Put FULL by Blog Post Feed and Blog Comment Feed. At least this is how it is done on my Mom's blog (and she is using Blogger.) Of course I know there are two versions of Blogger, a basic, and a beta version. I think we set Mom up with the beta version, so you may need to update if you are not yet using it.

I just REALLY enjoy reading both posts and comments. Makes it feel more like a conversation.

Say, I just read in my reader that the Crystal lake area is reportedly on the look out for a loose tiger, and that there was a Lion holed up in a church to ride out the storm. That is freaky, surreal, and awe inspiring all at the same time. There are many interesting stories coming out.

It's Crystal Beach, not Crystal Lake. I haven't heard any more about the tiger, but
here is a picture of the lioness.

and this was "only" a category 2 storm...

We were lucky too. So thankful.

That's the problem when developers move to a vulnerable low lying beach front area to entice homebuyers with a view. The pictures speak volumes!
