371.3 Digital Immigrants: More Background

In case you want to review information about digital immigrants and how they think and how they learn, here is a link with some good background information, some online samples of digital immigrant format materials in the public sector, and some vocabulary you may want to know. Topics include blogs, wikis, and gaming. There is a good "this vs. that" list of concepts to review.

Thanks to my colleague FM for passing along this link.
You can also review information from this previous post.

I know that b/c I was born before 1986, I am technically considered a Digital Immigrant, but I don't feel like one. I have been doing everything that this article (and several others I've read) say about Digital Natives for my entire life. I grew up in the late 70's/early 80's with computers all over the house, first street on the block with cable TV, the first cell phones (remember they were heavy, had a huge metal box attached, and went in the car?), etc. My Father worked for IBM, and we had the first home computers before they were available for purchase in our house. I was one of the only girls on the hall in college with a computer in the dorm room... but all b/c I was born before 1986, I am only an Immigrant, not a Native? I have no clue why this bothers me, but it does. I have decided that I grew up in a house of Digital Natives (except my Mother), surrounded by a society of Digital Immigrants. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. =)

I believe there are exceptions to every rule and you are one...basically because your dad was on the ground floor!! how lucky...and yes, I do remeber the original cell phones...needless to say I didn't have access to one of those either!
